Description
Muted colours in an earthy colour scheme and different shades of blue capture the play of light on the walls and the way the shadows suggestively change the shade of the interior. The atmosphere is calm and melancholy, almost meditative. Although no human being is portrayed, the work is full of a sense of life going on around the peaceful interior. The architecture is a central element of the subject depicted; no details have passed by Vilhelm Hammershøi unnoticed. The structures and textures are brought out in juxtaposition, contrasting with each other. The shiny polished surface of the wooden table reflects the image of the potted plant and the door frame, while light breaks in from the side, reaching into the room. Hammershøi painted several works depicting the same interior at his home at Bredgade 25 in Copenhagen, differing only in minor details; a plant is moved, or the location of a picture changed, but the room is repeatedly the same.
