Strindberg took inspiration in the natural world of the Stockholm archipelago and often painted subjects from it. He was fascinated by the beauty and wildness of nature and, in Impressionist style, painted stormy seas with plants and flowers, often from memory. “Flower by the Shore” represents just such a view; the subject is the island of Dalarö in the Stockholm archipelago. The painting is dominated by a light blue summer sky, with a lone flower in the bottom left-hand corner. Strindberg had a great interest in botany and often painted his flowers with detailed precision in contrast to the rough brushstrokes around them. The shoreline and the sky are painted in an Impressionist style, with thick fields of colour and broad, visible brushstrokes.
