DescriptionBesides his landscape painting, often featuring nude women bathing, Anders Zorn also stood out for his many self-portraits.
In “Self-Portrait in Dalarna Costume” we see Zorn posing in a traditional setting. In the gloom, we can make out the wooden walls and a few background details such as a cushion with a traditional design and the carved wooden chair that Zorn is sitting on. Zorn is wearing the folk costume of Mora, his home area in the county of Dalarna. The dark background and the bright colours of the folk costume here create a powerful contrast reminiscent of chiaroscuro – a way of using light and shadow to create life, movement, and tension in the subject. “Self-Portrait in Dalarna Costume” was exhibited at the Baltic Exhibition in 1914 and was then purchased as part of the Malmö Konstmusem’s collection.ExhibitionsSamlingen - The Collection, Malmö Konstmuseum, våning 2, 12.06.2021
