Description
In the painting we see Carl Larsson’s wife Karin standing by the water, thoughtfully gazing at the flowers in the border. She is wearing a dress she designed herself. Carl Larsson often used his home and his family as subjects in his paintings. Karin designed the interior of the home. Like Carl, she trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and she was the one who furnished the home of Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn where the family lived, designing its colour scheme and weaving its decorative hangings and bedcovers. She designed and sewed her own clothes and those of their children, and was key in creating the image of the Swedish idyll so often associated with Carl Larsson’s art.
