Biography

Angelica Kauffman was born in Switzerland in 1741 and died in Rome in 1807. She was a Swiss-British artist and a well-known name for her skill in portraiture from as early as her teens. Kauffman took an interest in painting early on in life, receiving her first lessons from her artist father. She painted in a Neo-Classical style, in line with the ideals of the time. She developed her skills by travelling to Italy where she was admitted to Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, the art academy in Florence, at the age of twenty-one. She enjoyed her greatest success in England, where in 1768 she achieved the ground-breaking accolade of being invited to become a founder member of London’s Royal Academy of Arts.
